Nominations Open for Five School Council By Elections

Elections Yukon will deliver 5 by-elections on October 22, 2018 to fill vacancies for the following schools:

  • Takhini Elementary School (Whitehorse)
  • Ross River School (Ross River)
  • St. Elias Community School (Haines Junction)
  • Eliza Van Bibber School (Pelly Crossing)
  • Nelnah Bessie John School (Beaver Creek)

Yukon Education develops an overview of the school year which outlines for each school:
--start and end dates for classes;
--holidays, Christmas and Spring Breaks;
--Non-instructional and in-service days (no classes for students)

The Fall 2018 School Councils’ Conference will be taking place at the Yukon Inn, Whitehorse on November 15–17th. Everyone welcome! More information will be posted in the coming weeks.



Great Projects Supported by Yukon School Councils

One Time Project Funding provided by the Association of Yukon School Councils, Boards Committees supporting student learning has been distributed to 23 schools across the territory this past year. Highlights include purchase of school equipment, expansion of hot lunch program, increased student participation in cultural activities and outdoor field trips and summer literacy camp to support reading and literacy.

REMINDER TO AYSCBC MEMBERS--Do not miss this One Time Funding Opportunity

This is a reminder to all AYSCBC Member School Councils--if you haven't done so yet, don't forget to submit an application for this great opportunity!

Here is the original News announcement, made in May 2017:--
The Executive of the Association of Yukon School Councils, Boards & Committees is excited to announce that it will be providing AYSCBC Member School Councils with an opportunity to receive a contribution of up to $5000 each to enhance school-community connections in support of student learning.
This one time funding opportunity allows for flexibility in how Member School Councils plan for and support events/programs/resources that meet the specific needs of their students and local school community.

Guidelines
Each Member School Council, in conjunction with the school principal and superintendent, will determine what project(s)/initiative(s) are included in the proposal, ensuring they align with existing school priorities, growth plans or on-going programs.
The proposal can include more than one project.
Dept of Education policies and guidelines must be followed. (More information on this is available from your principal and superintendent.)
A motion needs to be passed by the School Council in support of the proposal and a copy of it must accompany the application form which is available here.

Proposals may be submitted electronically to the address on the application form.
Once School Councils are notified that their application has been successful, funds will be disbursed. Accounting for the expenditure of these funds will be reported separately and included in the School Councils’ annual year-end financial statements.

Time period
Approved projects must be completed by August 31, 2018 to coincide with the conclusion of the term of office of currently sitting School Council officials.

SCHOOL CALENDAR SURVEY--Provide your input

Yukon Education is conducting a survey regarding the School Calendar for the years 2018 through 2022 and welcomes your input.
The survey will be available online until October 16th and can be found at: http://www.education.gov.yk.ca/calendar-survey.html
along with other relevant information.
The calendar for the 2017-18 school year is also available on that webpage.
